Zoltan Merszei

Experience: Mr. Merszei retired from The Dow Chemical Company in 1979 as the Company's President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, culminating a career of over thirty years. During his tenure, Dow became the most profitable chemical company in the world. Before returning to the U.S., he served as President and CEO of Dow Chemical Europe, founded Dow Banking Corporation in Zurich, and expanded the Company into Latin America and the Far East. From 1979 to 1988, Mr. Merszei served as Vice Chairman of the Board and a Director of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, during which period he also served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Occidental Chemical Corporation; President and Chief Operating Officer of Occidental Petroleum; Chairman of Occidental Research Corporation. He served as a Director of Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd.; Enoxy Coal Inc.; Industrias Oxy, Mexico; and Co-Chairman of Enoxy Chemicals Inc., Italy. Other directorships include, or have included: The Budd Company; Burlington Motor Carriers; Western Pioneer; Dole Food Company Inc.; Thyssen Industrie AG, Germany; Thyssen Henschel America; Thyssen Budd Automotive Inc., Germany; LAC Minerals Ltd, Canada. Mr. Merszei has served, or is serving, as a director or trustee of a number of institutions, including: The Society of the Chemical Industry; The Society of Plastics Engineers; The U.S.-Hungarian Economic Council; The Marrow Foundation; National Childhood Cancer Foundation; The Aspen Institute of Italy; The Council of Americas; The U.S. Chamber of Commerce; The Conference Board; The Business Roundtable; Business Graduate School of Purdue University; Northwood University; and The Salk Institute. Mr. Merszei was honored with degrees of Doctor of Law, Doctor of Science and Doctor of Chemical Engineering. His other awards include the E Award from The Department of Commerce, United States Government; The Grand Cross of the Order of Merit by the Spanish Government; and Commander of the Order of Oranje Nassau, the Netherlands.
